Ethnic fashion is chic /Lo étnico está de moda

“Going ethnic” is a trend that is becoming a style in fashion collections and it seems that ethnic fashion is here to stay for a while. You can see this in the designs not only of clothes but also of accessories, such as bags, belts, jewellery and even shoes.

In clothing, the prints show their geographical / historical provenance. Some of the ethnic styles most often encountered currently are representations based upon features of a particular group, its customs, traditions, beliefs and folklore.

Each ethnic group is identified by its colors and designs (which are distinguished by being specific and different from others) and the complexity of the technique used in the process of creating the particular piece of art-work. The results are frequently spectacular, beautiful to look at, pleasant to feel or to touch, elaborate and intricate – they are works of art in every sense of the word.

Fashion design, also an art-form, absorbs these symbols and promotes the reinvention and application of these concepts. Depending on the context provided by the community in which it is created, fashion design can become at the same time highly cosmopolitan and very local.

The tendency to include elements from the past in the present is not new but currently it has become trendy to do so. This trend is spreading across the globe. In fashion design what is chic these days tends to incorporate both contemporary and ethnic elements. The designs most readily found at the present time include those from the Navajo, Inuit, Incas, Aztecs, and other indigenous peoples.

Designers who recognize the richness of the different cultures, rescue this wonderful artistic heritage and transform it into wearable art, emphasizing in the process the value of handmade traditional clothing.
